I'm spitballing, but I hypothesize that the hardware we currently stuff in there to help human drivers be safe is more expensive than what we'd eventually use to just let robots do it.
In other words, UX is kind of expensive, and we can dispense with a lot of driver "UX" and feedback, & just let the machines do everything. I may be way off thol
