Maybe I'm dense, but ... why is unlocking the phone even important here? There's not any dearth of information about what he did and why, and text messages are available from others.
That's what I keep saying. They have him threatening mom-in-law. There's no hint of a co-conspirator. But I think that's the point. As w/SB they're going to politicize a phone they know they don't need to access.

If letting 48 hrs go was intentional, it undermines cred if they push for backdoor law. "We threw out the tool we had, but we totes need a law." If unintentional, still a bad look: "We keep fucking up even tho we should know better! Give us a backdoor so we can fuck that up too."
