Maybe I'm dense, but ... why is unlocking the phone even important here? There's not any dearth of information about what he did and why, and text messages are available from others.

That's what I keep saying. They have him threatening mom-in-law. There's no hint of a co-conspirator. But I think that's the point. As w/SB they're going to politicize a phone they know they don't need to access.

If letting 48 hrs go was intentional, it undermines cred if they push for backdoor law. "We threw out the tool we had, but we totes need a law." If unintentional, still a bad look: "We keep fucking up even tho we should know better! Give us a backdoor so we can fuck that up too."
-
And yet do you doubt that's what is happening?
-
And yet *sigh* as said, I find it hard to assume otherwise, yes.

Why didn’t they press the dead man’s finger to the screen?
-
That's the point of the story. FBI had a way to get in the phone, chose not to use it. SB replay.

Ahhh.

Why the Hell wasn't the shooter behind bars for life? He was a vicious, violent man - forget buying firearms, he should have been off the streets!
-
He shouldn't have been able to buy a knife or a baseball bat or drive a vehicle.

Get real. It wouldn't stop any of them. Doesn't stop Mexico & we're a little smarter than that, aren't we?

Can't imagine this happening if the shooter had been of darker hue.
