      Newspapers had property and the staff (and incentive) to get that right. Doing so would have established norms of civility in online world

      Instead newspapers said ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ and closed commenting, and now we've got incivil norms here & elsewhere.

      Isn't this more a failure of social media? Internet giants have the resources to properly staff moderation. But newspapers are struggling…

      I'm thinking newspapers could have done it in the 2000s. At the moment when incivility started becoming the norm, before Twitter.
