Newspapers had property and the staff (and incentive) to get that right. Doing so would have established norms of civility in online world

Instead newspapers said ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ and closed commenting, and now we've got incivil norms here & elsewhere.

Hah. A long-running topics of discussion in the Guardian comments was all the opinion pieces so inflammatory they'd be bannable in comments.

Commenters used to invite particularly incivil opinion writers to "come below the line and say that" (possibly still do).
