In September, DHS banned government agencies from using Kaspersky. http://www.politico.com/story/2017/09/13/kaspersky-software-banned-242664 … For a long time, and especially since the ban, reporters have been asking officials for evidence of the harm Kaspersky causes. They've declined to elaborate. We now have one example.

It's worth noting that there's no evidence that Kaspersky actively helped Russia discover or steal these files. Its software just detected them.

If the contractor's files contained code that matched code in NSA malware, this would make sense. The main job of an antivirus program is to detect that kind of stuff.

N.B.: Rob Joyce, who now oversees all cyber policy for the Trump administration, was the head of the NSA's elite hacking unit when all of this happened. Bet he's pissed.

But the story reports that it was only discovered this year, meaning it wasn't discovered under Joyce.
