Why is the FBI going after WannaCry hero Marcus Hutchins (@MalwareTechBlog)? @emptywheel has an interesting theory.https://motherboard.vice.com/en_us/article/yww85w/malwaretech-marcus-hutchins-wannacry-kronos-legal-explainer …

I'm suggesting that looking at "WannaCry sinkhole" w/stuff they had on MWT is different than "Kronos" w/stuff they had on him.
-
So is the theory that he was involved with WannaCry? Or that when they looked him up then, they found something Kronos-related?
-
No. One possibility: 1) They look at stuff to see IF he is involved. 2) IN THAT CONTEXT they see Kronos + Kelihos.
-
3) Kronos + Kelihos (RU criminal hackers tied to some other shit) + WannaCry looks vastly different that Kronos AlphaBay purchase
-
That said, I also point out that they may be interested in him for stuff that's not in the indictment at all, but which came up.
-
So, you think he was involved in one of these (Kronos, Kelihos, WannaCry, something else), and it came up when they looked him up?
-
And that it was substantial enough for them to believe they can win a court case?
-
I think they may have miscalculated, honestly. I think the Kronos case may be fragile (but possible superseding might not be).

Yes, I did read the article. But it was so long and so full with stuff I've already known for a long time! What is new?
-
That we're thinking of it wrong in "why Kronos" and not "what does a back door search in 2017 look like."
