Is the argument that Russia started it or that this what Russian bots want to promote. Clint Watts said the latter.

Clint Watts said the latter after letting NYT run with the former. But why should we blame bots when 100K US twitter accounts started it?

One problem with The Gizmo is, to the extent its model of influence is transparent, it's not robust at all.

Also note: The Gizmo doesn't claim all the bots they follow are Russian. It is actually possible they're American.

Not just possible, explicitly state it includes people known to amplify themes knowingly or unknowingly, ie, Jack P http://securingdemocracy.gmfus.org/publications/methodology-hamilton-68-dashboard …

Except that's not what Jack P does. He often leads RU, doesn't follow (which is what he appeared to do here).

I agree, but what ratio would you require to include him? named him, btw, because twitter searching urls turned him up as obviously on list

It's not a ratio. it's that The Gizmo assumes anyone who agrees w/RU must be influenced by RU, not vice versa. It does so w/o evidence.

I don't think it does that at all. Their methodology page says they include people who may have merely benefited from RU amp, such as bots

they do seem to downplay it and use broad definitions of words like "influence" and "relevant". But what error margin is acceptable to you?

It's not an error margin. It's a methodology as a whole. They're presenting Gizmo as evidence for stuff it's not.

I don't think they ignore that, just downplay its broad nature. Everyone pushing it as the Russian memecatcher seems to be ignoring itpic.twitter.com/TxnqJx0tSJ

I'm not claiming it's a RU memecatcher, tho it is claiming to be. I'm claiming it's a methodological shitshow.

I don't think its claiming to be (tho they downplay it, and method). But I like it and want more tools like that, w/ more chance to refine

Why do you like it? Because it places utterly false stories in the NYT that you like, even if false?

no, if that's the purpose and result, then I agree with you. But I find people like Jack P interesting because so much of Ru influence fails
