Report on how FireMcMaster spread, w/its faults (I'll come back to) shows hashtag came from far right, NOT RU. https://medium.com/@DFRLab/firemcmaster-explained-9e9018e507c2 …

I am acutely interested in rel between Russia, Breitbart, Alex Jones, et al. But AFAWK Breitbart's $$ comes from US. American assholes
-
Article does mention the most prolific tweeter of the hashtag is an employee of Sputnik.
-
That's not actually what it claims. And the claim it DOES make is thoroughly undermined by the entire rest of the article.
-
Second most prolific sorry
-
Where does it say that?
-
-
That disparity is really confusing at 0521 especially considering the sample is smaller for the higher number.

Is the argument that Russia started it or that this what Russian bots want to promote. Clint Watts said the latter.
-
Clint Watts said the latter after letting NYT run with the former. But why should we blame bots when 100K US twitter accounts started it?
-
One problem with The Gizmo is, to the extent its model of influence is transparent, it's not robust at all.
-
Also note: The Gizmo doesn't claim all the bots they follow are Russian. It is actually possible they're American.
-
Not just possible, explicitly state it includes people known to amplify themes knowingly or unknowingly, ie, Jack P http://securingdemocracy.gmfus.org/publications/methodology-hamilton-68-dashboard …
-
Except that's not what Jack P does. He often leads RU, doesn't follow (which is what he appeared to do here).
-
I agree, but what ratio would you require to include him? named him, btw, because twitter searching urls turned him up as obviously on list
-
It's not a ratio. it's that The Gizmo assumes anyone who agrees w/RU must be influenced by RU, not vice versa. It does so w/o evidence.
