The (by far) most surprising thing about Australia to me. People drive the (far, far too low) speed limit.

That's astounding given my understanding of the Australian stereotype. You expect drivers to be going fast and punching other drivers.

Yes. I saw one person going the speed I would have been. I'm mystified.

cameras everywhere. you WILL get a ticket if you speed. Got one for going 108kph in a 100 zone. In US you'd get an approving nod for that.

OK. Makes more sense. You gotta admit it's a bit creepy, everyone driving so slowly in such a big country?

Yeah, especially when you grew up there before the panopticon and go back and it feels like everyone just dropped quaaludes before driving.

If you drive aggressively, you can rack up $15k in fines in an afternoon, and if you get caught DUI, they can take your car.

a while back, their health service decided that speeding and DUIs were too expensive, so they stopped them.

The entire driving culture changed in a few years, and health costs (and deaths) dropped significantly.

Nvm, missed the rest of the thread. Still wonder why the population didn't riot. (Northwest Iowa would.)

Very different cultural relationship with the state, but also it was a genuinely good idea and a crisis.

Speed cameras everywhere. Automatic penalty on your license if you're 3kph above the limit. Big money fines. All focuses the mind
