10 years: not too long to allow J Edgar to take root, long enough to span POTUSes, to foster apolitical position.

Simply saying, "doesn't matter if Trump appoints politicians to run FBI, we'll get WH and appoint our own" accepts politicization of justice
-
Eventually (prolly sooner rather than later), it won't matter anymore, bc FBI will be enforcement wing of one party control of state.
-
If you simply say, "so what, POTUS Warren will appoint her won FBI Director" (which would be AWESOME), you accept new norm of politicization
-
Except that moves us very very far away from democracy and rule of law, period.
-
In any case, if that is where we are going--to bloodthirsty politicization--Dems had better get a LOT more effective and cutthroat, stat
-
Sounds like maybe only solution is not allow prez to appoint FBI director. Have them pick their own or have 2/3 margin in senate requirement
-
We have a real weakness in our constitution that everything in Exec needs to be under POTUS control.

I thought it was meant mainly as term limit, after Hoover
-
No. It was meant to be both: floor and ceiling.

But that 10 year term is now out the window.
@potus showed he could dispatch with an FBI dir with no consequences (so far) -
Right. So we either impose consequences or we accept a VERY different America from here on out.
-
Impeachment seems like a perfect consequence to me.

Was it OK Bill Clinton to fire his FBI director?
-
Do you know why Sessions was fired? Do you know how long and deep investigation into his ethical issues went? Finally under what President?

I think firing for misconduct and criminal behavior is different than he won't sign a loyalty oath to me #
#TrumpRussiaInvestigation -
Narrow the reasons Director could be fired And keep the term. Like FISA judicial oversight on firing for cause.
-
Is this advice for the future? If and when this disaster is over?
-
I don't think it's bad to have the position be appointed and vetted by Congress. I think it is bad to leave it open to political dismissal
-
Of course!
