Q: Given that the FBI DIRECTOR got fired, how will appointing Special Prosecutor (AKA Special Counsel) fix the investigative problem?
-
-
I mean, I get the urgency. But I'm not sure how Dana Boente isn't the best possibility at this point, however bad.
-
Maybe an optics thing? Force Trump/Sessions to fire a special counsel to make it stop. Not that the GOP cared when they axed Comey.
-
Wouldn't firing The Last USA be worse?
-
Functionally, yes. Optically, perhaps not given that the special counsel would be explicitly tied to the Russia probe in people's minds.
-
Im not sure how the related trade off in institutional power is worth it.
-
I think you're right; I'm not sure either. I don't know what institutional power, if any, is strong enough to matter now.

Seems like this is all a special dance to avoid impeachment proceedings.
-
Impeachment is pointless, even in the (somewhat unlikely) scenario that Dems retake the Ste. in '18. Still need 13-15 GOP Strs to remove.
-
Even if there is no will for it, the responsibility falls to congress to investigate/impeach the executive branch.
-
Who doesn't love a good constitutional crisis?! Only thing that will force GOP to act, is more leaks (incl. from foreign agencies).
