This is an important story. But the IC seems to be overstating role June strategy paper could have on March hacks.https://twitter.com/cchoksy/status/854789724971642881 …
I get that everyone wants one coherent narrative but IC's clumping of everything together as "Grizzly Steppe" undermines valid analysis.

Just as an example, I'd bet a great deal of $$ we could find equally "incriminating" stuff abt USG messaging around RU's 2011 elections.
-
There is *no doubt* that one take away from how bad Trump-Russia... is that the US needs to stop being imperialist.
-
I don't think messaging is being imperialist. Everyone does it. It helps that our media outlets are way more effective tho.
-
There's other stuff that is more imperialist, tho, which also was one reason Putin hacked DNC.
-
Yeah, my basic view is countries have a right to complain about external interventions and/but past wrongs don't make Russia-Trump right.
-
Sure. But I would distinguish between propaganda, which everyone does, and hacking-and-leaking, which is still rare (tho not unprecedented)

If the American electorate is so fragile that it cannot even withstand what happens when Silicon Valley products get turned against us...

there actually is an on point legal theory on that issue: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eggshell_skull …

I agree. I think different "Russian"/pro-Russian entities did differing things over different time periods. 1/2
-
Even if, e.g., Russia/Trump money ties 2003-08 were known to official Russia... I don't think they had a 2016 election plan in mind. 2/2

Right, and honestly, depending on the date, that Think Tank document totally undermines the dominant narrative on RU hack.
-
I guess it depends on what you think is "dominant." My *guess* has always been pro-Russian sorta freelancing was retroactively blessed.
-
(in terms of US politics, whether ex ante "Putin plan" or not, if done with pro-Russian motive & Trump people discussed before release...)
