Dear all. It's becoming clear now why right wingers are focusing on "unmasking." It's not JUST ignorance. It's what affects powerful.

-
In reality, Flynn's comms--ALL in FBI"s hands--would be accessed by FBI ROUTINELY once investigation started. Bc that's how FBI rolls.
-
But that's not what the Right Wing Noise Machine is complaining abt (which, btw, both WH and Nunes want reauthorized).
-
All this bs is fun for Fox and Trump but doesn't do a thing when it comes to criminal investigation.
-
The goal is to come up with names to accuse of leaking. But the premise is faulty, based on shiny object.
-
Investigating oppo's campaign has tension betw 'appropriate' and 'over-reach'. Reps hope to show Dems trawling for tidbits, no there there.
-
Except ... they've consistently (thus far anyway) talked abt transition period.
-
IIRC Trump's crazy tweet mentioned campaign. As to transition politics, "resisting" seems to be a widely-shared Dem. goal.
-
Right. Based off the Mensch to Levin to Breitbart game of telephone. Not--explicitly anyway--off this.

Unmasking (at least in this case) is a power play between the powerful. That doesn't mean it doesn't matter.
-
There is as of yet zero evidence this isn't solidly in line w/what Nunes has long insisted as necessary for NatSec.
-
The standard is not what Nunes thinks. The question is if publicly unmasking is criminal, and if so who (if not Rice who?) did it and why.
-
What public unmasking happened?
-
Flynn.
-
We actually don't know what happened there, but it is at worst a no-brainer unmasking followed by leaks, not a public unmasking.
-
It's the public leak of an (understandable) unmasking, which may be a crime, committed for potentially partisan reasons, that is problem.
-
It's not clear the leak came from an "unmasking" tho.

Unmasking can harm average people too but in domestic criminal context as opposed to FI (that's where the dont understand probably kicks in)
-
Back door searches are not unmasking. The number of criminal referrals are single digits. The number of back door searches--uncountable.
-
We don't know numbers on derivative use for domestic, and it could always jump in future even if low now
-
Please be rigorous abt distinction bt back door searches and unmasking. Or I'll need to drop out of this convo.
-
I'm highlighting unmasking as a separate problem in terms of domestic criminal use
-
OK. That's my cue to drop out. Bye.
