4.) So forget "media" (a term Tom Stoppard once wrote sounds like a convention of spiritualists). Focus on "mainstream."

5.) In decades past the right purported to represent the mainstream. Hence "silent majority" and "moral majority." No more!

6.) Now the right proudly defines itself in opposition to the majority, presumably because it's been corrupted by diversity.

7.) Hence "mainstream" becomes a term of derision. Surely no political movement that takes this view of the majority has much of a future.

Note how you jumped from "mainstream" to "majority" and back? Not sure your logic holds.

You dispute that "mainstream" and "majority" get at the same idea?

They are related, but by no means synonyms.

Why would Trump try so hard to pretend he had a big inauguration if he didn't intend to pretend he had a majority? Or EC win?

Indeed, he has repeatedly pretended he represents a majority when the numbers don't back him on that front.

To achieve his make-believe majority he delegitimizes actual (if in this case imaginary) majority by crossing off undocumenteds.

Yeah, you already said that. You think Nixon's silent majority didn't involve the same kind of imagination?

Nixon's silent majority I think argued that his supporters outnumbered his detractors, which was actually true until Watergate.

Based on the results of 1968 election which was possibly even more troubled than 2016 one?

Thank you. I don't think I made a claim to the contrary. You DO know how many people don't vote?

Trump is demonizing MSM bc it has little trust, among the left or right, bc of recent reporting failures. Don't overthink this

That just isn't true. The people who talk about the MSM are almost 100 percent cons.

LOL. Yes. Judy Miller was criticized primarily by cons.
