The debate over the UTC-Carrier deal cannot be divorced from the discussion of the disastrous F-35 program.

We have industrial policy no one likes to talk about: war toys like F-35. These are justified bc ... war, as distinct fr economic necessity
-
F-25 indust policy disastrous bc 1) there is so little competition left we have lost leverage over contractors (like UTC's Pratt & Whitney)
-
2) It doesn't retain the manufacturing base defense ultimately needs or jobs in places like Indy 3) it fosters more war.
-
But if we can fund F-35's crummy engines made by UTC's Pratt & Whitney, we can have real industrial policy that might support UTC's Carrier
-
Republicans don't do this!!! Oh no!! Socialism!! But our GOP President-elect just made industrial policy fair game again.
-
There is a tension in the Republican party between Infrastructure Keynesianism and Military Keynesianism. Guess who wins?
-
*has won. Given Trump's campaign promises there's no reason not to pressure him to change that.

-
"company expects to hire 25,000 workers worldwide over the next 10 years" 1/3 in CT. 100% of jobs shd be in US
-
Part of the gimmick with the F-35 is that other countries get jobs and therefore buy planes. It's nuts.

a plane that should never have been built* *because doing land based, carrier based, and VTOL in one airframe is idiotic

It's a policy fit for the Cold War. F-35 is useless. 19 dead guys with boxcutters had total air supremacy for a week in 2001.
-
I wonder how many of our carriers will may it into WWIII: day two?
-
I have a little more faith in our electronic countermeasures than that. And who's to say WW3 hasn't started already
