So I went with a paper ballot. And then the guy took it and scanned it into a machine. Which seems to defeat the purpose.

That's actually the best way to do it. Gets the speed of machine counting and checkability and auditability of paper.

No, they're almost certainly not connected to Internet but they can be hacked. @benjaminwittes
