Worst thing was journalist said, "I'm asking in your capacity as an "analyst/commentator." Because analysis is for free.

But we do that to people everyday - accountants, lawyers, police. We ask for their time for a quote.
-
Yes. But they are not our competitors in a field in which we also get paid. A lawyer asking help fr another lawyer expects to pay.
-
first tweet made it sound like a quote - but guessing was taking a lot of time to explain something, which would be different.
-
This is the second time I've asked this particular journo not to ask for my work for free. It was a shitty insulting request.

I get most of this, but who charges/pays for a quote?
-
A journalist who is being asked for journalistic work?
-
Your tweet makes it sound like you were asked for a comment. But followup sounds like it was more for than that.

"Research is hard. Couldn't this be a press release?"
@emptywheel -
"The normal source of our press releases doesn't know WTF they're looking at, say you might, but won't pay you either."
-
Journalism only works when the journalists do the work.
