When Apple says it's "going to Congress" they are endorsing--thus far--the idea of a commission, not a law. There are different things.
@Susan_Hennessey You're suggesting they should legislate w/o real understanding of trade-offs?

@emptywheel Nope. I'm saying that to the extent Apple asserts lack of law as defense in court, notable that it doesn't support actual law. -
@emptywheel Commissions can be useful, but are as often stall-tactics or attempts to kill a controversial issue. -
@Susan_Hennessey@emptywheel I think it'd obvious that's exactly what Apple is doing. I hope it works. -
@normative@emptywheel Sure. And I hope people of US don't find their right to representative voice crushed beneath commissions+ doublespeak -
@Susan_Hennessey Is it the institutional view of NSA that having Congress legislate from ignorance best serves the country?@normative -
@emptywheel@normative The notion that Congress hasn't been focused on issue deemed high exec priority for years is awfully silly. -
@emptywheel@normative All facts are friendly, and if a commission serves to separate ideological views from science, then great. -
@Susan_Hennessey Or rather, separates hysteria and false claims from science.@normative - 1 more reply
