Obama asking for $95M more for computers for DOD, which already has better computers, to do OPM's old clearance job http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-cybersecurity-whitehouse-idUSKCN0V022F …
@Cujo359 Right: But it also suggests that OPM didn't have the equipment to do this properly in the first place.

@emptywheel Other possibility I can think of is that those old computers can't run DoD-required software,ie,recent Windoze,scanners,etc. -
@Cujo359 Mikulski was asking for something like $37M for OPM to upgrade last fall. So is DOD more expensive? Or more confident they'll get $ -
@emptywheel Do I have to choose? Both could be true.DOD purchases are expensive on their own,as any1 who remembers $300 hammers can attest. -
@emptywheel Hmm,looks like OPM had requested more money earlier,about $91M that was shot down. http://federalnewsradio.com/all-news/2015/06/flash-audit-serious-concerns-about-personnel-computer-fix/ … -
@emptywheel OK,reading more closely,it was shot down for _cutting_corners_.Maybe $95M not so unreasonable,after all http://federalnewsradio.com/all-news/2015/06/flash-audit-serious-concerns-about-personnel-computer-fix/ … -
.
@Cujo359@emptywheel Had thot this accurate when story broke, but mayb overblown cuz contractor$. DoD chip backdoor http://m.slashdot.org/story/169579 -
@KanysLupin@emptywheel As the writer of that SD article says,definitely should take a grain of salt with that.OTOH,as complex as chips [1/] -
@KanysLupin@emptywheel .. R these days,I'd be leery of any complex chips that weren't either OSd or weren't validated in some way.[2/]
