@emptywheel Whiskey is a modern product. The pilgrims were more likely drinking something ale-like. Bourbon shows up in 1800's.

@jonahsilas But it IS quintessentially American now isn't it? Bc branding? -
@emptywheel But now you got me thinking about brewing up some gnarly colonial beer next year. Fresh hard cider also probably ok. -
@jonahsilas I'll come fetch some, thanks. (or make spouse make the same, assuming you're not close) -
@emptywheel I'd happily share as any actual replica probably offends the modern palate. :-) -
@jonahsilas No backbone, too much booze, I'd assume? -
@emptywheel Just not a clean ferment. Nearly all modern alcoholic bevs made with lab isolated yeast. Ambient flora more diverse. -
@jonahsilas Oh, cloudy shit. I get that. But it also doesn't have today's bitter does it? - 7 more replies

@emptywheel as a bourbon enthusiast I would be for this, but one problem is that not enough Americans drink. -
@petersuderman "Drink," or "drink bourbon"? -
@emptywheel only about 70 percent of Americans report having a drink last year. Abstainers make drinking traditions harder.
