A big difference w/ the 90's crypto wars was export controls on open src crypto. Then, we wanted regs removed. Today, FBI wants regs added.

Crypto (& other backdoors) were almost certainly on FBI wish list in 2001, yet weren't seriously proposed in Patriot Act, etc. What changed?

One possibility: FBI isn't actually trying to get new laws (a tough sell), but is trying to establish industry norms that include backdoors.
