What has not been explained well re: Yahoo/Prism is: did providers have any control/pushback over target selectors? Or was it all automated?

@emptywheel What form did the directives take, and were Yahoo employees responsible for manually collecting and delivering the data? -
@matthew_d_green It was clear Yahoo had a hands-on role. But also clear other providers may not have. Also, requested types changed in year. -
@emptywheel In the initial denials there was talk of surveillance requests being authorized on a case by case basis. But that was BS, right? -
@emptywheel I mean, once Yahoo lost its initial lawsuit and appeal, they were obligated to comply with every individual request? -
@matthew_d_green Suspect they ratcheted up the requests on Yahoo to punish them for getting uppity. Suspect MSFT may have more leeway.

@emptywheel@matthew_d_green This shows NSA provided lists of accounts & Yahoo turned them on 1 by 1. Not automated http://www.dni.gov/files/documents/0909/Yahoo%20Compliance%20Report%2020080514.pdf … -
@charlie_savage@emptywheel@matthew_d_green ...the process were subsequently automated. (Unsurprising it's not the first time...) -
@normative@charlie_savage@emptywheel A lot of the initial criticism of the PRISM reporting focused on this. -
@normative@charlie_savage@emptywheel It was 'not direct access to the servers' and 'providers could challenge each individual request'.
