@emptywheel They serve different ends and use different resources. Google ad tracking isn't about detecting threats. -
@Dymaxion Ah, but hackers aren't only threat to Google. Amazon, MS, Apple are too. Gather info abt "weapons" to exploit given territory. -
@emptywheel Absolutely; not claiming they are. Commercial espionage is a big deal, but not the same as consumer-facing info gathering. -
@Dymaxion But I think there's a continuum, in same was as continuum bet State services and CIA HUMINT. -
@emptywheel Sure. And companies run CIA-in-Pakistan-style false flag info gathering missions at the same kind of peril. -
@Dymaxion Not different peril?? If caught, antagonist doesn't have explicit power to detain, kill. -
@emptywheel Reputational and relational risk is what matters to both the company & the Company. No one cares about the agents. -
@Dymaxion CIA cares abt reputational risk? DOD sure. But CIA? - 4 more replies

@emptywheel Both corporate intelligence and corporate market info gathering are issues, but not the same issue. -

@emptywheel Related, of course, but the distinctions matter.
