If we insist that the security services provide us with the best-possible cover against terror attacks, our liberties are expedient hostages

@emptywheel#PRISM is a long, long way from sigint. It's clearly the domestic stuff, but I'd expect similar programs for external threats. -
@leashless Have you even READ the minimization? It has an entire section devoted to keeping DOMESTIC cyber data. -
@emptywheel Yes,#PRISM is a domestic programme. We have not seen substantial leaks on the non-domestic programmes. -
@leashless I think you're confused. PRISM (702) has had overwhelmingly international successes, at least in terror. -
@emptywheel Right, but PRISM is not the gear used for, let's speculate, monitoring the Pakistani SMS networks. -
@leashless No. Which is one of many reasons it's not primarily abt terror. But the actual structure of it is now abt cyber, not terror. -
@emptywheel I think it's simply we haven't seen data on the other programmes. I can't see PRISM being very good for cyber, frankly. -
@leashless I guess I'm firmly of the belief that they're using it in the ways in which it deviates from the actual law. Which is cyber. - 8 more replies

@emptywheel@leashless The nature of big data & statistical methods in general is better for mass effects than freak independent incidents -
@OrwellUpgraded I agree this might be effective against cyber. But we need to have THAT debate, not one govt has tricked us into@leashless -
@emptywheel@leashless Better approach against cyber would be design a better network protocol in the first place. TCP/IP is rubbish. -
@OrwellUpgraded Which is the reason we should actually HAVE that discussion than, as@leashless is doing, reinforcing govt myth abt terror. -
@emptywheel@leashless Real & more socially benign solutions require good forethought & design. That is where the will is severely lacking.

@emptywheel@leashless terrorism is how it's sold - how it will be used... http://m.guardiannews.com/environment/earth-insight/2013/jun/14/climate-change-energy-shocks-nsa-prism … - environmental and financial shocks -
@larryang@emptywheel I think that is very plausible. Putting in the kit now to quell Brazil-type kickoffs if they come in Anglosphere.
