Question: What other bulk records, besides calling logs, is the government systematically collecting under Patriot Act Section 215?
@charlie_savage And all that's before geolocation, which strikes me as a more recent collection.

@emptywheel My thinking is geolocation is subsumed into the call log library we now know about: metadata from cell calls. -
@emptywheel Someone read in, when I asked re cell geolocation a year ago, laughed & asked: why people so obsessed w/ that in particular? -
@charlie_savage But prolly right, geolocation is just cell metadata. Q is would they collect it differently so as to use more broadly? -
@emptywheel The broader use would be to collect passive cell phone locational data - i.e. tower triangulation when not making active call -
@emptywheel But that would be a lot of work for the telecoms, not clear that info would have any business purpose so records may not exist - 1 more reply

@emptywheel@charlie_savage geolocation is most likely the same cell tower triangulation data that's been around since the 90sThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo
