Great WaPo story highlighting that citizen-journalist may serve a purpose, but citizen-cops are counterproductive http://buff.ly/YCH47I
@Susan_Hennessey So the point is NOT that people crowdsourced. It's that media magnified it in totally irresponsible ways.

@emptywheel Irresponsible media made a bad thing worse. NYPost is despicable. But Reddit/4chan "investigation" threads idependantly harmful. -
@Susan_Hennessey I mean I know it's fashionable--has been for 10 years--to blame citizen stuff for media mistakes. Usu poorly thought out. -
@emptywheel But distinct from mainstream media amp effect, unfiltered, amateur investigation not good. Not same as citizen tips to LE. -
@Susan_Hennessey And you keep ignoring fact that the amateurs you see as all-powerful self-corrected before "pros" did. -
@emptywheel Self-correction means different things between LE and Internet forums. LE doesn't blast unverified info, then say "nevermind." -
@Susan_Hennessey Also, your use of word "blast" suggests a media-influence model you have not yet laid out. -
@emptywheel Sorry, trying to keep up in 140. Not my theory, quoted LE theory. See my original tweet distinction b/w citizen journalist/cop. -
@Susan_Hennessey Your interpretation relies on a theory of influence (and ignoring many details of WaPo story) that you're not describing.
