Investigating Mexico's disappearances highlights the dark side of the Navy's counternarcotics operations: http://www.insightcrime.org/news-analysis/reports-on-mexicos-disappeared-put-us-in-a-bind …
@stcolumbia That said, any idea how regionalized Mexico's Navy is? The culprits in disappearances in NE, not near DF.

@emptywheel The way I understand it there's a qualitative difference in problems between NE MX and DF. -
@stcolumbia Both in terms of the cartels power and the Navy, though? -
@emptywheel Yeah. DF seems much more useful for money laundering than transit route. Turf battles between local drug sales. -
@stcolumbia Tho I AM concerned--esp by MX govt's response to reports--also think Eng coverage has conflated corruption and disappearances -
@emptywheel Yes. Both bad, but different problems. Corruption usually incentivizes turning a blind eye, not harsh crackdowns.

@emptywheel In DF it seems like LE take the lead since the issue is the domestic drug market vs more profitable trafficking in NE. -
@stcolumbia Just noting that Insight and I both look at Cuernavaca-based partnership, tho I'm sure we're far busier in the north. -
@emptywheel Well there's plenty to look at in south due to Central American trafficking routes, but DF itself seems v. different.
