@grumpybozo ...3) there are indications they were fishing for other information. My issues are abt standard law enforcement BS they pulled.

@emptywheel The LE part seems pretty *normal* to me, not *right* The outliers are MIT and the prosecutor.

@grumpybozo It seems utterly NORMAL for me for DOJ's highly politicized prosecutions. That it involved SS and not FBI is not the issue.

@emptywheel It’s not unique to politicized prosecutions. It’s only visible in the cases that get pushed. MIT had to be pushing.

@grumpybozo One area where I am curious is how ECTFs work--what is the institutional structure/referral process?

@grumpybozo One question I have is whether a referral could come out of CMU's CERT to SS. Or could SS learn about it there?

@emptywheel In my experience, getting a case to SS can happen by varied routes, formal and informal.

@grumpybozo Now I do! I asked bc CERT was doing flow analysis, but USG was planning on keeping them away from trial http://is.gd/CR4V7V

@emptywheel Gotta be careful about “CERT”. US-CERT is not CMU CERT. But they are friendly. Lots of IT security folks are friendly with LEOs

@grumpybozo And then there's the question why _MIT_ would have to go to CMU? Or is that the problem you're referencing? ;p

@emptywheel I have not dug into the docs to understand that detail. Are you sure they went to CMU CERT and not to their own internal CERT?

@grumpybozo Doesn't that refer not JUST to forensics on the laptop, but the earlier access through the login. (Refers to other computers)

@emptywheel Yes. flow is flow. On MIT wires. I’m guessing they took their problem here: http://www.cert.org/forensics/

@grumpybozo tho this seems to suggest JSTOR, at least, didn't notice anything in that Nov-Dec period, until Jan 3. http://is.gd/VdDARY
