US flagged ship and crew seized in Venezuela accused of arms trafficking- for 3 anti-piracy rifles on vessel. WTF?
@Galrahn Well there is an interesting possible discrepancy of how many were on board, w'Emb saying 15 and customs broker saying 14.

@emptywheel it is an odd situation. Where is the US government on this, because nothing explains a US crew jailed for a week and ship seized -
@Galrahn Also find it curious it was US flagged. Isn't that only necessary--and therefore the expense paid for--under certain circumstances? -
@emptywheel why is it curious that it's US Flagged? The ship has always been US flagged. -
@Galrahn I thought you only need US flagged ship to ship certain things for certain clients, & often people will avoid the cost otherwise. -
@emptywheel operators will often use US flag if the equipment is US government owned. That may be situation here, unclear though. -
@Galrahn It really is remarkable no one has disclosed what cargo is. It should be available in the vessel tracking stuff for paid members. -
@emptywheel not anymore. Pirates were using that data, so it is no longer accessible or revealed. The cargo is a mystety. Who owns it? -
@Galrahn Oh, I hadn't realized it--it looks like you can join and pay thousands and get it. That wasn't that long ago, was it? - 3 more replies
