The drug war and the war on terror show us there isn't really such a thing as a border anymore, or at least one the US empire respects.
@kade_ellis Sure. That's power asymmetry, though, it is not unique to the border.

@emptywheel No but stuff like the NDAA literally brings the war home, in a way anti-Vietnam war hippies couldn't have imagined. -
@kade_ellis Not true! They were explicitly called terrorists. This just prepares the legal ground to return to where we were. -
@emptywheel I didn't know there was a law that allowed the state to imprison them without charge or trial, indefinitely. -
@kade_ellis Tell that to Fred Hampton. He got the Awlaki treatment. -
@emptywheel amen. but where's the legal memo that authorized his execution?

@emptywheel I'm pointing out the problem the US has in terms of asserting sovereignty these days. -
@kade_ellis Well, they're HAPPY to assert it when it applies to some topics. They just do it in a way that upends the concept. -
@emptywheel That's precisely my point. It doesn't really exist. The border is dead. Long live the border. ;)

@emptywheel Can't say it doesn't exist for x, y, z, w, a, b, d, but it is so important for f. f being "defending the borders from illegals" -
@kade_ellis Who's going to stop them? -
@emptywheel No one! I'm just pointing out that it's full of contradictions, and that sovereignty means something today it didn't mean in '50 -
@kade_ellis Yup. But it all arises from that "no one" answer. Cause if you believe you're all powerful, then borders are inconvenient. -
@emptywheel Exactly! Inconvenient, except for when you want to fill up detention centers or justify new biometrics programs for all! -
@kade_ellis Don't forget they're also a wonderful opportunity to use "border exception" to root around peoples' computers. Very useful! -
@emptywheel ah yes. How could I forget.
