Domestic terrorism in the US between 1980 and 2000 consisted of 250 incidents confirmed as or suspected to be terrorist acts by the FBI.
@AllThingsHLS Do you have a link for that? I realize FBI has its own definition, but it excludes some obvious terrorist attacks.

@emptywheel The FBI definition of terrorism doesn't distinguish between Domestic and International terrorism. Those#s are fm WikipediaThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

@emptywheel Not the greatest source, I admit, but they mirror the post 9/11#s cited by Steve Coll in the New Yorker. http://bit.ly/ezybil -
@AllThingsHLS Coll's numbers are problematic on several points (though he does include some that SHOULD be there that FBI doesn't).
-
@emptywheel I think all of the numbers are problematic w/o agreement on definitions, whatever they may be. -
@AllThingsHLS Yup. Other problem: we tend to kill white terrorists/destroy evidence b4 we collect info that might lead to terror designation
-
@emptywheel That's b/c until recently LE/DOJ was only concerned w/proving underlying crime, not proving motivation. -
@AllThingsHLS Right, and I think FBI STILL doesn't value domestic terror investigation like it does Islamic terror investigation.

@emptywheel The biggest issues I have with all of this is separating Domestic from International terrorism, definitions used, and the datesThanks. Twitter will use this to make your timeline better. UndoUndo

@emptywheel As I have stated elsewhere, the def of international vs domestic terrorism changed post 9/11 w/addition of material support chgs -
@AllThingsHLS Problem is material support, but also different treatment of things like WMD charges.
-
@emptywheel The issue is ripe for some solid academic research with a strong LE perspective.#NotJustNumbers -
@AllThingsHLS Yup, & unlike w/drone strikes, we OUGHT to be able to come up with standard defs of domestic/Islamic/other foreign terror.
