I was under the impression that the sarcasm was backed up by (unnamed) first-hand parties to the conversation, not generically "the DOJ claim", but they keep framing it that way?

Schmidt was all over MSNBC last night trying to defend his sourcing, which pretty much amounted to “I know something you don’t know”.

Another sports writer I follow, noted that Schmidt similarly "carried water" for an unscrupulous source when reported on the MLB steroid cases (https://goo.gl/mB3Hcs ). Its not a good look for a journo, and you have to weight that past with this recent reporting.

I think they have some kind of deal with Trump in which -you scratch my back and I’ll give you something in return. Trump gives them access and then they write a story he wants, every so often.
