This NYT story is acquiring the temporal collapse of a Sara Carter story. The original story suggested the incidents happened around May 10, two weeks after Rosenstein was sworn in. That would suggest the wiring the President/25A discussion happened RIGHT AFTER Comey firing.pic.twitter.com/hxhwixdbNd

NYT again suggests all this went down on May 10, again suggsting the wire the President/25A discussion happened immediately after Comey firing.pic.twitter.com/Elyoyi3Yau

Then, in an update designed to rebut the (more responsible) reporting of other outlets, NYT reveals the timeline suggested elsewhere in the article is false. It wasn't May 10. It was May 16. It's still not adequate rebuttal bc they're working only secondhand, not fr docs.pic.twitter.com/4UpHmpcuMt

But here's how NYT has undermined their entire story. It's NOT in response to Comey firing alone these things came up. It's in response to Comey firing, admitting it was bc of RU investigation, and leaking Israeli Intel to Russia. That changes the meaning. A lot.

That's another thing that misleading quotes abt Page's take on whether there was evidence of "collusion" on May 17 (which NYT Mike gets wrong 100% of time in any case). Does leaking intel to Russia count after firing the FBI BECAUSE of RU investigation? Well, it's sure a clue.

Anyway, highlighting NYT's original misrepresentation of timing also makes clear that this leak is exclusively about decision to hire Mueller, and their "scoop" is just inadequately understood (by them and their sources) attempt to say Rosenstein was nuts when hiring Mueller.

Maybe before publishing stories that may lead to a Constitutional crisis actually understand the timeline?

You like dancing? Listen to Schmidt dance like crazy as he is pressed on his sketchy sourcing: https://www.npr.org/2018/09/21/650611025/new-york-times-reports-deputy-general-rod-rosenstein-suggests-secretly-recording … It's actually embarrassing.

The crazier thing is it was IN NO WAY a massive decision to appoint Mueller. I mean, it was being discussed BEFORE the Comey firing. What a shit show.

Can I ask a dumb journalism question (since I'm not one)? So is the big beef here that this info is second-hand? If other outlets are confirming essentially the same content, then I don't understand the kerfuffle w/this story (aside from others think it's a hit piece).

The big problem with the NYT is they took the second hand impressions of people who had only read documents and gave that more credence than actual witnesses. And that the people reading the memos for them appear to be conflating them.

Thanks! Schmidt seems adamant about this, and, I wonder if he actually has these documents/memos? I would only assume this since it's Schmidt and he has had memos before (or at least access to them).

Fair point. I only assume that he (or Goldman who hasn't been on the TV circuit yet) has something to substantiate this--are editorial standards for these types of sourcing fairly strict?

It's the NYT, they still haven't copped to their complicity in selling the Iraq war, much less the journalistic malpractice that was their coverage of the 2016 race.

When Trump started attacking the press, I decided to subscribe to a newspaper in support of journalism. It came down to the @nytimes and the @washingtonpost. Let’s just say I made the right choice by subscribing to WaPo, because canceling a subscription is a PITA.

I'm speculating here but I'd guess the story is about creating such a crisis...its game time....if the population doesn't act, and soon, Kavanaugh will be in and Trump might be, as Mike Moore argues in his new film, be the last president.
