4/ I just have a phone on me, and this is an interesting question that probably isn’t going to play out (b/c of Manafort’s state crim liability). Thoughts? @Mimirocah1 @danielsgoldman @Delavegalaw @CBHessick @nycsouthpaw @AshaRangappa_ @BarbMcQuade @JoyceWhiteVance @emptywheel

Agree with what you’ve said. If I understand your remaining question - can’t get immunity for lying to the court.

But that still leaves open a question: he claims his court testimony is true. Would an immunity deal immunize him for obstruction based on contradicting his proffer?

Immunity grants don’t protect you from perjury or obstruction charges if you lie while giving immunized testimony. But as
@EricColumbus points out, what would stop Trump from then pardoning Manafort for perjury or obstruction?5 replies 4 retweets 33 likes -

As I argue here, I think you first have to figure out what Manafort took such a hellacious plea deal. https://www.emptywheel.net/2018/09/14/the-objection-that-made-muellers-case/ … I strongly suspect part of that it he came to believe what comes next won't be pardonable.

It’s actually a good deal for him, not hellacious at all. See my other reply.

I saw it. You're saying 2 years and zero money is better than 2 years and $16M. That ... doesn't seem like a good deal to me.

Where do you get two years? Look at the plea agreement. Minimum was 17 1/2 years in the DC case alone.

Let's see. When do presidents pardon people? At the end of their Admin (though Trump has admittedly been less disciplined than most). For Trump that will either be in January 2019 or January 2023.

It'd indeed be great if his Admin ended in January 2019, but I believe you mean January 2021 or 2025.

I've been failing math all week. Thank you, you are correct.
