Where is the 'implication that only Manafort" could nail Trump taht you mention in your post? The link doesn't seem to support the strength of that conclusion.

Yes, that's what I want evidence for. The cited evidence is that Trump said Manafort wouldn't flip. Doesn't seem to support the conclusion.

What is wrong with you? Its just a simple question. I'm a huge fan of emptywheel's. But sorry to waste your time requesting information and/or clarification.

Chris — I agree with you. I understand the point being made, and think you do too, but would also like to see this sourcing beyond 1 article. Maybe we are too in the weeds and need to pull back up?

Sorry for the delay -- it was a busy day. It's a deduction, not a description of what the underlying article says. If Trump says He's safe bc Manafort won't flip, that suggests Manafort is the only one who could implicate him.

There's reason to believe that's fairly accurate, with one caveat. The caveat first: Don Jr could probably implicate pops, too, but Sr probably assumes his spawn will never turn on him.

But Jr is, like pops, badly underlawyered here, and terrible in interviews in a way that's different from the way Pops is terrible, I think stemming from Jr being way stupider. So it could happen before we're done.

Back to Manafort: I think Manafort is in a position to uniquely implicate Trump bc 1) during a key period, he was in at least one and I suspect several meetings along w/Trump 2) he was one of the interlocutors with Russians, so is a pivot to Trump.

That continued after the election, btw. Remember that the strategy to defend against the investigation by undermining the Steele dossier comes from Manafort. And Kilimnik was in the loop later than people think thru (Through March 2017, it appears).

So in other words, to the extent that Trump was telling friends in January that Manafort and only Manafort could implicate him, I think that may have been one of his most honest comments about this investigation.

That said (and this is speculative), I think Stone will implicate Trump in ways Trump hasn't thought through all the way, bc Trump was slightly more distantly removed from that agreement to conspire.
