This was obvious from the way this went down. Mueller got him to do ... something with that 1.5 hour delay this morning. So it's too late for Trump to avoid that testimony w/a pardon.https://twitter.com/DelWilber/status/1040622275735822337 …

So Mueller's day (so far): 1) He just paid for the investigation. 2) He got the witness that EVEN TRUMP has said has the goods on him. It's not even lunch time yet.

Remember, too, that in the wake of the Gates plea, Mueller got warrants for the phones of probably around 10 Trump aides. Manafort will probably get him to more.

disagree - two things a pardon does: 1) gives evidence to Mueller of an attempt to obstruct justice; 2) provides impetus to move Republicans towards protecting Mueller and considering impeachment
-
Ken I’m about to institute a policy of blocking people who still repeat the obstruction meme.
-
Marcy, are u saying I am repeating an obstruction meme? I am simply observing that there could be impacts of a pardon beyond Mueller's legal case, at least as I heard it including from some Dem electeds who speculated that Manafort was about to flip before Friday
-
Anyone who suggests Mueller is pursuing obstruction as the primary issue against Trump at this point is doing Rudy's PR work for him.
-
Didn't say it was primary concern, but wld also b wrong 2 argue it isn't part of what he is exploring. A pardon of Manafort now would go to state of mind as part of a pattern, & my response to you was also about political implication. Agreed that pardon doesn't help Manafort now
-
Mueller is so far beyond the place where he's "exploring" obstruction. Does he have Trump dead to rights on it? Yup. And while a dangled pardon might be more compelling than Comey, he's already go plenty of evidence. But at this point obstruction charges are just tactical.
-
I don't disagree. But apropos a pardon, partially quoting Seth Waxman: "if the president were to pardon Manafort under these circumstances, the case against the president for obstruction of justice would be even more compelling"

Wouldn’t trump still benefit: he could use it for political spin, it would push the Manafort issue beyond the midterms, Mueller may know what Manafort has to offer but it’s not useful unless it’s said in court; the cooperation agreement w/Mueller would be useless.
-
There is zero way he does that, as it'll just hasten impeachment.
-
Boy oh boy am I hoping you are spot on. I’m counting on it.

Can you explain how a false statement to DOJ would be prosecuted in state court?
-
I'm talking money laundering. Point being that there's plenty to send him to prison with in the dropped/dismissed.
-
If the dropped or dismissed charges are part of the plea deal, wouldn’t a pardon cover those as well?
-
Not state charges
-
State charges would be pushed past the midterms. No way to crank them up and get a conviction that quickly.
-
...so?
-
Past midterms, Trump will be impeached.
