Apparently Bill Browder is unfamiliar with the way FBI recruits informants (or the kinds of people they target).https://twitter.com/Billbrowder/status/1037300909741682688 …

First, where in the article does it say that the US does not use these methods? Second, the FSB is not the equivalent of the FBI. You should know this.
-
Okay. I'll bite: Who investigates terrorism in this country? Who investigates cybercrime in this country? Who investigates spies and dissidents in this country?
-
You forgot to add: who assassinates domestic opponents? And: who uses polonium in domestic opponents?
-
It is true that CIA engaged in the most recent assassination of a political enemy, but Fred Hampton might disagree that FBI never has.
-
Who is America’s Boris Nemtsov that was assasinated by our intelligence service? This is disgusting moral equivalency on your part.
-
You're arguing Fred Hampton wasn't assassinated by our intelligence service?
-
You’re two tweets away from excusing Soviet atrocities by citing US treatment of blacks under Jim Crow. Can’t wait to see it!
-
You're zero tweets away from defending lynching as if it was a non-political act.

It's not that the practices are inherently wrong, so much as who's employing them, and toward what ends. Yes, the FBI and our other agencies have committed horrible atrocities, but there's little in the way of active moral equivalency to be drawn between them and the FSB.
-
Because we're exceptional?
-
Of course we're not. As a leftist currently screaming my lungs out on behalf of our IC, I find this entire political moment absurd to no end, but one can surely see the differences between US and Russian intel services without white-washing the sins of the former.
-
Much of what FBI does is precisely what FSB does. Far too many people treat the phrase FSB as just magic word--it's not. By treating it as such we dodge discussions about law enforcement in counterproductive ways, particularly wrt tech.
-
Sure, much of. But at a time when external and internal forces are pushing towards transitioning our entire society toward Russian style kleptocracy, and the FBI are on the frontlines of pushing back against that ill, I'm standing with them. Doesn't mean I'm closing my eyes.
