By choosing Palin as VP McCain helped facilitate the constitutional crisis we are in now. Responsible journalists will not gloss over this. @jaketapper

Been saying it all day. Death illuminates the positive, hides the negative.
-
Exactly! He was willing to do anything to win the presidency including putting a moron a heartbeat away from it. I will never be able to give him a pass for that. It was probably a step that lead us to Trump too.
-
Probably my butt. It def helped give us Donald

That single act will be noted by historians as the beginning of the end of the Republican Party. Or the United States.

Id love to read a real piece on how/why that decision was made.

Has Steve Schmidt written about it?

It wasn’t really him, though he always took the blame for it. It was a combo of the RNC, Steve Schmidt, and a few other not smart cronies. He wanted Joe Lieberman and let himself be talked out of it.
-
Kristol had a hand in it, same as his 1993 memo was a roadmap. His anti-Trumpism is a running joke at the moment. He built this base much as any GOP power player.
-
Agreed. Also are you living on The Busted Flush in Ft. Lauderdale or have you moved on?
-
Still at Slip F18 Bahia Mar. Very few tweeps have picked up on that. I read once that JDM considered Meyer, not McGee, to be his alter ego.
-
I’ve read all the books twice. I was madly in love with McGee for years. I think it might be an age thing, most people under 40 would find his views old-fashioned. Honor, respect, dignity, kindness, not so much in favor now.

Tough guy with a heart. Vachss “Burke” is another. Jack Reacher is the closest modern example and I gravitate to that type. Key thing, violence is the last resort, but satisfying when it comes.

Still think there's an untold story there or at least one I've not heard.

Palin was the beta version of Trump.

Misses point that the GOP wanted what Palin represented. McCain went along. The seeds of that resentment were planted long before 2008.

Like the guy said, he made plenty of mistakes. At least he had the humility and cojones to admit that. In politics that's unbelievably rare.
