Before I start this thread, I repeat what I said when Mueller was appointed: he was a good choice bc he had credibility, trust at FBI, and was perceived as non-partisan.https://www.nytimes.com/2018/08/25/us/politics/robert-mueller-russia-investigation.html …

This latest hagiography leaves out something all such things do: the Amerihtrax investigation, where twice people who couldn't have done the crime (at least by themselves) were accused.

Also, as far as I know, no biographer of Bob Mueller has ever explained this meeting with Cheney at the end of the hospital confrontation. https://www.emptywheel.net/070814-mueller-notes-hospital-conflict-2/ …pic.twitter.com/Lg4kn0sd8P

Given claims like this (FBI not only knew CIA was torturing, but knew they had exceeded authority given by DOJ), that's worth noting.pic.twitter.com/fRcAGhxKI8

The other aspect of Mueller's background that few have noted--but which is central to understanding RU investigation--is that FBI was relying on Felix Sater as informant WHILE he was part of Trump world. Why didn't the corruption get prosecuted at that time?

As to these comments about Mueller not testing a new theory? I think that undersells how much effort Mueller has put into a strategy that has side-effect of reinvigorating protections on Democracy, w/appellate staff of 4/17.pic.twitter.com/XyEGkiAQUN

And the notion that subpoenaing the president (by a guy whose FBI got Cheney in a quasi Grand Jury appearance?) would test limits of executive power? Maybe work on a more obvious theory.pic.twitter.com/qrOZiMcE9g

Having just credited Rudy G's tripe, NYT here -- on issue of final report -- doesn't (smartly). Add in the fact that Rosenstein keeps saying overandoverandover indictments will do the talking.pic.twitter.com/voZAAMqfhs

Anyway, I still think Mueller was the right choice for the job. My guess though -- and that's all this is -- is that this investigation is different for him.

Unfortunately, though I agree w/much above, I still see Mueller as an institutionalist. Safeguarding democracy will require more than nice examples. People--high up people--need to go to jail. & crucially, any report/indictments must include Pence, because he's neck deep in this.

If it weren't for Paul Manafort, Chris Christie would have been the nominee. Also, MP was in transition meetings in fall 16 that likely included Flynn talk.

Paul Manafort was, in addition to being a likely RU asset, an experienced consultant who knew what it would take to make Trump acceptable to enough Republicans to win. Thus -- Pence.

And while Pence was in meetings of interest, he is not known to be in the most important. I think Republicans who knew what a vulnerability Trump was saw to it to keep Pence relatively clean. That may not be enough, but I'm just not aware of "neck deep" evidence.

There's certainly nothing of the sort established, but there's a good bit of circumstantial evidence around his running of the transition, lying about Flynn's comms with Kislyak, the Flynn firing, etc. overlapping with some of McGahn's exposure you've previously outlined.

Actually the story abt Pence lying abt Flynn's comms may be an invention to cover up why Flynn lied.

Pence def lied on FtN about Flynn comms. WH story's been that Flynn had lied to him, thus supplying (late/thin) reasoning for Flynn firing. Always seemed more plausible that Pence knew full well he was lying on air, which would tend to implicate him in the surrounding cover-up.

That's interesting. You rarely speculate like that. I'm inferring you believe the depth and breadth of Russian (and American ) involvement make this investigation sui generis. Am I on the right path?

My guess--again, that's all it is--is he recognizes he left Trump out there to stage this, and my guess is he's especially offended by how casually people are shitting on democracy.

I also suspect he knows he is riding the tiger. He can’t steer the entire process - just hang on and see where the investigation leads. But because the tiger knows he is there - and driving him crazy - the result will ALMOST be like steering.

Great! While we often say Mueller is almost robotic and unemotional, the man is driven. And his rate of production is phenomenal. He and his team are driven. He understands the politics and hence his practice of establishing the criminal conspiracy before adding ppl to it.

To steal a phrase from a guy who understood investigation ... there are both known unknowns and unknown unknowns. We will have to wait to see what’s revealed. In the end my guess is no one is happy with the result except maybe Team Mueller.

Bingo. Two counts criminal conspiracy to Defraud United States to start. Fat-ass was also private citizen. SCOTUS may delay trial, no basis to toss indictments. Constitution does not shield fat-ass for acts committed as private citizen.
