I learned so much about journalism from both watching & working at @democracynow for many years. So the Russiagate era has been perplexing. Here's @emptywheel asserting existence of a Trump-Russia "conspiracy" as established truth without any pushback: https://www.democracynow.org/2018/8/22/michael_cohen_pleads_guilty_implicates_trump …pic.twitter.com/HyH4z6j0w3

Aaron: Even pretending you engage with the actual evidence rather than your cute caricature of it, do you know what is legally required for a conspiracy?

Here's a hint: All that's required for a criminal conspiracy is in the public record. That's it!! But that would require you to become familiar with the public record.

If it were in the public record, you could point it out; but you can't. You just keep going back to "it is in the public record".

Aaron has been misstating what Goldstone said in the public record for weeks now. If he can't read a transcript--and you can't either--it's your shortcoming. I;m not here to teach you to read.

Don't understand why you're making a claim here that you can't possibly back up. Maybe you're confusing me w/ someone else.

Aaron. You continue to misstate what Goldstone said. Yesterday you did. You did so two weeks ago. The only confusion here (or more likely bad faith) is you abt what you're talking abt AND not understanding you're making prosecutors' case.

What am I misstating? You've said that several times without specifying. What I also find strange is you claiming that I'm making "prosecutors' case" on Trump Tower when, as far we know, there is no actual case (unless you have secret info?).

On the prosecutor's case, I'm laughing at you bc you don't understand that the standard for conspiracy is what Junior agreed to, which is what was in that note. Mostly I'm just laughing that you don't understand the evidence.

As to you repeatedly misstating what Goldstone said, when he was asked what the "bare facts" that Emin wanted him to include, he said "the bare facts: attorney, damaging information, Democrats, Hillary Clinton" (and implied that "helpful to the Trumps" would be in there too).

Ok, & so not only not "repeatedly" but you won't find a single instance of me "misstating" that. In any event, if you think that's grounds for a conspiracy charge -- & worth laughing about that someone else doesn't agree -- then also ok. I have a different view.

I'm asking you to engage in the facts. You misstated the Goldstone facts repeatedly, in this instance and the last time we discussed it. So, again, this is not a disagreement. It's you, ignoring facts so as to sustain a belief you want to believe.

Aaron: for there to be a Trump-Russia conspiracy, a music publicist's email* doesn't suffice to prove it. Marcy: "the elements needed for a conspiracy" in that email suffice to prove a conspiracy, irrespective of whether we can prove the email led to anything beyond a meeting.

*the email, by the way, promised "dirt" about Hillary's "dealings with Russia", not hacked emails, i.e. the dirt at heart of the alleged Trump-Russia conspiracy. This has been very clarifying.

I get that "a music publicist" gets your rocks off Aaron. But that's not evidence about what Don Jr intended. And you always conveniently forget the other evidence--that the campaign had been informed of emails and Don Jr seemed to know what Goldstone was talking about.

1/ no actually, there's no evidence campaign was informed of emails. George P is the one who told FBI about emails/Mifsud (Downer's tip was so vague that it had neither) - as indicated by zero communications from George P to campaign about emails.

Let's be clear: my critique in the initial tweet was not of you - if you think there's a conspiracy, ok. My critique was of DN for not asking you to substantiate it, as if a Trump-Russia conspiracy is an established fact that doesn't require corroboration. https://twitter.com/aaronjmate/status/1032400719704469504 …pic.twitter.com/BAICBXOjJH
