Couldn't have helped that the prosecution couldn't show the actual documents during trial - jury only saw once they went to deliberations.

and the judge also pointed out that the instance of bank fraud was unsuccessful for some reason

Seems like the judge had a hand in that confusion right? “Talk about the loans that went through” for example.

Ellis responsible for preventing prosecutors to allow jury to look at docs during trial to be able to show the supporting docs in real time. Ellis also made it sound like if no loan provided, no fraud.

So, basically, yeah, this is the judge's fault.

Also the prosecution not mapping the charges to the evidence more clearly for a lay jury & a judge not allowing more written instructions to jury in a white collar case My sense is Ellis is a clown

On the bank fraud counts, they hung on all of the counts related to Lender D. My guess is that someone latched onto Gates' role as the intermediary as creating reasonable doubt. Not sure what evidence govt had showing direct Manafort involvement.

Manafort & Cohen both came down within 15? minutes, 20? Wow.

The judge’s comments on the evidence lead to the mistrial in those claims. The prosecution should refile the charges and ask for the judge’s recusal.

AND there's another Manafort trial coming next month. https://amp.usatoday.com/amp/1034142002

Back to the original question, what's a "shelf company".
-
are you referring to the jury's original question or are you actually asking?
-
Refering to their question. They couldn’t follow the law or didnt remember, or didnt understand, how business are structured.
-
got it. (were they allowed to take notes? that's allowed in some courts but not others. and it seems absurd that they can't refer back to transcripts. absurd and antediluvian.)
-
In think they were allowed. And still they couldnt keep track. We have work to do with education.
-
indeed. someone mentioned the scott peterson jury took two weeks. manfort's jury seems like, "eh who can tell? fuck it. eight counts is enough." like sorting through all the documents - WITHOUT references to which charge (seriously?) - was just not worth even another day.

Can the government retry on those cases?
-
Mistrial? sure. Up to prosecutorial discretion & whether they think it's worth it.
