On one side: "You travel a lot. Maybe this is finally the moment to buy a Tumi." On the other side: "Shut up! Your last one was perfectly adequate and lasted years." My real instinct: "No matter what, make sure it's snazzy to make gate check pickup easy."

side topic: do TSA dogs sniff out terrorist foster dogs?

I think I even got sniffed and they offered me no help against her.

The TravelPro bags are really good. We used to pay for Briggs & Riley but these are much less costly.https://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-carry-on-luggage/ …

Also their top pick is on sale right now. (They seem to go on sale every two weeks though.)https://twitter.com/WirecutterDeals/status/1029732070010933248 …

Not as often as you'd think! We post separate deals on the separate colors, which tend to drop independently, and we recommend a few different models of Travelpro luggage for different needs.

I lucked out with a used Tumi at Goodwill, although I had to wrestle a man for it. It’s really great. I don’t know if I would spend $300 for it but for $20 it was awesome. Best hard shell luggage I’ve ever owned.

Bright yellow to boot.

Do you have a Marshall’s or TJ Maxx where you live? They have great luggage at a steep discount.
-
I second this - also Nordstrom rack. I've seen Tumi at both places.
-
No idea about luggage, but generally speaking, brand name products sold at discount stores are often lower quality products made by said brands for such stores (get shipped straight to them). Doesn't mean they're not worth buying, just FYI.

One day I'd like to invent the 'Tardis' bag - bigger on the inside

I have a TravelPro that I’ve used for more than twenty years. I’ve replaced a couple of zipper pulls and that’s it. Has fit in every overhead compartment I’ve tried. Even on those little planes with compartments only on one side.

Constant traveler advice here- spend the money for a well made bag, outside pockets for easy access to ids/water/phone, size to fit under seat if necessary, consider how quickly color choice will show dirt, I like straps or wheels option for ease in big airports Happy Shopping

Forget Tumi. At that price point Briggs & Riley is the only choice. lifetime repair/replace for *any* damage, no proof of purchase required, no questions asked. Ed's TravelPro recommendation is good, too - almost as good, half the price. If you decide to go cheap, look at Timbuk2
