Asking a Fourth Amendment nerd why the police don't just get a warrant is like asking an auto mechanic why drivers don't just buy a new car.

2/ Some people don't get this, so let me elaborate. First, the mechanic's focus is on how to fix the car. Someone else's value choice about how to approach buying a new car that probably won't break down is generally not what he cares about. So first, it's changing the topic.

3/ Second, there's no universal answer to why someone doesn't buy a new car. To some people, buying a new car is easy. To others, it's completely out of reach. And some may have the money but don't want to spend it on a new car if they don't have to. It just depends.

4/ And on a lighter note, c'mon, have to protect the business stream! If everyone is buying new cars, the mechanic is probably going out of business.

You must not have seen my comment. This is 100% incorrect. Selling new cars are, for dealers, actually loss leaders (or very small profit leaders) to acquiring a customer for repair work. It's in repair work that car dealers make all their money.

New car dealerships, yes. But my tweet is about mechanics.

And car dealerships make most of their profit off the labor and parts sold via their mechanics.

I was thinking of repair shops that are not associated with dealerships. But either way, thanks for your insight.

NP. I gotta use my car dealer expertise where I can, you know. I can also attest that car dealers (the owners) seem to be a universal type, very similar well-networked schmoozy types around the world.

And to completely derail this, this is why dealerships hate electric cars. Very low maintenance.

Also why dealers hate Tesla's plan to bypass the dealer model.
