When those Sekulow questions were released in June, they made it clear that Mueller was increasingly focused on "collusion," not obstruction. https://www.emptywheel.net/2018/06/02/what-got-added-to-sekulows-list-further-obstruction-including-considering-of-firing-mueller-and-collusion/ … Even still loyal scribes pushing the obstruction story pitched the list as an obstruction story.

And golly, since then I've come forward and made it clear that someone with a significant role in the RU attack knew about what Flynn was being ordered to do 14 hours after polls closed. https://www.emptywheel.net/2018/07/03/putting-a-face-mine-to-the-risks-posed-by-gop-games-on-mueller-investigation/ … That doesn't sound like obstruction-worthy investigation to me.
-
And btw, that Mueller shift from obstruction to collusion? It happened in March, not June, when Rudy & co's attempts to stall any interview started.
-
Marcy, can you elaborate on obstruction-to-ConFraudUS (aka collusion) focus shift as to why then? https://twitter.com/emptywheel/status/1024354921456574474?s=19 … P.S. Makes sense if enough evidence (seems so) Mueller would prioritize ConFraudUS, but why not also charge obstruction to bolster collusion case?
-
"Charging" is the problem. Another assumption people are parroting with little apparent reason is that Mueller is working towards a report, because he can't charge the President. That may be true but he can show that the president engaged in crimes via other means.

So your criticism is over whether this is the "primary focus" versus the secondary focus of Mueller's investigations? And your view is that reporters are wrong to write pieces on the obstruction part of the investigation?
-
Well, as my piece on the same topic Murray's story is notes, the conclusion from that chain of events should be about "collusion," not obstruction. https://www.emptywheel.net/2018/06/03/the-giant-holes-in-trumps-mike-flynn-story-point-to-collusion-not-obstruction/ …

Mostly it's a question about how stories like this work, when sources generally come from people who are all part of the same defense agreement, it becomes very easy to manipulate a press hungry for scoops. Tell the story. But thing abt why you're being fed it.

@emptywheel breathes fire at obstruction-only tales, believing they serve donny’s ends pre-11/6/2018 I kinda agree
“Trump, Russia, and the News Story That Wasn’t”https://nyti.ms/2jHyede -
I’d also note
@murraywaas’ story seems to emanate from the same triumvirate of#Burck clients as a lot of the WH leak stories since fall 2017@Reince@StevenKBannon#McGahn & that in these stories 1 or more of the triumvirate always emerge heroic Often at donny’s expense
