I am a big fan of your analysis, but confused by your anger toward this particular article. Much of it seems accurate from my POV. I'm involved in politics in liberal SC and this rings true here, "the Russia issue runs counter to their goal of repositioning the party to the left"

Why is it Chait's job to tell SC activists what they should focus on to get SC voters to vote for SC Democrats?

There ARE real problems with the left's embrace of the Russia investigation as they have. Partly it's an uncritical celebration of FBI and its leaders. Partly it's celebration of right wingers who created preconditions for Trump. Partly it's jingoism.

Or maybe...just maybe, it's the hope that a lifelong criminal will finally be held accountable for his actions.

But does that fix anything? Damage has already been done, and Trump is just a figurehead. The train will keep moving even if he’s removed, albeit without the dancing monkey to distract from what is largely being done administratively in quiet.

It's a fine line, for sure. It is crucial that we're always skeptical of law enforcement and intelligence; at the same time, if SCO makes legit cases for white collar crimes, and Manafort, etc. finally have to pay for the impunity they've been afforded their entire lives... good!

I admit that, politically, I don't want candidates to talk about RU. I want SCO to do the job. I want candidates to talk about issues of wealth and income inequality, like M4A and criminal justice reform (especially for drug crimes). I want to hear how to stop voter suppression.

One interesting angle on this: what if Russian interference is the impetus that finally gives Democrats leverage to stop voter suppression, get money out of politics, end gerrymandering, etc?

That might be true if they were pointing out that what RU did is just mobilize the same tools (disinformation, voter suppression, delegitimization of govt) the GOP has been using for decades. They're not. I wish they were.

Maybe I'm being too optimistic, but I think a lot of this will change when Mueller is done. Dems will have a lot more ammunition & support.

There's a ton of support now. Mueller already released Internet troll indictment Dems could use to point to GOP's use of same (tho Hillary ALSO used bots).
