Here's the biggest puzzle for me abt Trump. His biggest fear is to be mocked (cf WHCD 2011), to appear weak. His capitulation to Putin rightly makes him a mockery among those who aren't horrified. Why doesn't he care?

Are people thinking about this the wrong way? Maybe Trump knows exactly how bad his actions vis a vis Russia look (and are), but also knows he has no choice because of what Putin has on him. So he blusters (poorly), thinking he can bring his base and party along for the ride.

See, I think I've been saying that for a while (and I think I DO have an idea of how compromised he is). Still, he must hate being made to look weak.

Wonder if inviting him to the WH so quickly was a way of pretending that what we all saw wasn't weakness but entirely what he wanted to do.

I think Vlad made him do it to humiliate him further and show him who’s boss.

We know this and Putin certainly does too. Having Trump look so subservient on the world stage is the ultimate flex of Putin's muscles.

Which is exactly why Putin continues to make him look weak. It’s all about blatant power. Putin is flexing.

We're looking at him lurch around trying to find a way to retell the story in a way that he's the hero, strong & infallible. REMEMBER: As a psychopathic narcissist the one fact in his mind is that he is perfect & infallible. Facts that refute that have to be changed or ignored /1

When the facts are too strong and too public, you see increasingly bizarre behavior & lashing out, until things stabilize. (When psycho-narcs. find themselves imprisoned, then they spin a self-pitying tale of martyrdom, heroism & being a political prisoner, or whatever)/2

Oh yes, he hates it. Like all pathological narcissists, he has several coping mechanisms: lying to himself and others, hiding the truth, overcompensating, denial, etc But deep down, it still eats him up. And sometimes, when the failure and humiliation is still fresh, it showspic.twitter.com/iRYq15Oiqy

I'm sure he hates it, but Putin has him in zugzwang. (I'm sure @Kasparov63 would agree.) Explains how defeated he looked with Putin in the press conference to me.

I also think there is a slight possibility that Trump actually wants to be impeached or forced to resign. He will play it as he was "wronged" & that the deep state won. He'll go to his grave playing that line...but being in the WH is too restrictive for him...costing him...

Can't ignore the power of having your own cable news network telling people they didn't actually see what they just saw. Fox News has already convinced Trump, and his followers, that Monday's press conference with Putin was a 'bigly success'.
