Covering the sure-to-be-a-shitshow HJC hearing w/RosenWray. Holding a party line vote on whether to waive notice requirements. Cohen voted nyet; the poor clerk didn't get the joke.

Ohhh. Goodlatte had said Jordan's resolution was not germane, then stepped off the floor so the majority could overrule it. Notes that this is plan to remove Rosenstein.

Nadler notes that the subpoena in question was not issued in accordance with House rules. He notes that much of it DOJ cannot turn over. "That of course is the whole point. Republicans requesting docs they know they can't have."
Show this thread -
Nadler suggests docs accidentally turned over have already ended up in Trump's possession, then handed to Fox News.

Nadler: When SCO's work is complete, when enormity of what he finds is laid bare, how will the efforts of this committee look?

Meanwhile, over at the House, it's a total party line vote to back this stupid obstruction effort targeting Rosenstein. Let's see if any GOPers have the self-respect to vote against.
Show this thread -
On top of every other obnoxious detail about the way the GOP have done this HJC hearing, by pulling Rosenstein here, then having the vote against him on the floor, they're basically wasting a half hour of his day. He's chatting up the press (or aides) in the hearing room.

OK. Now that members have started filing back in, Rosenstein left the hearing room to go back to (presumably) Goodlatte's office.

Goodlatte said something to suggest making Wray stand up would be onerous. Maybe stress-related back issues? I would be. Indeed, I think I am.

Rosenstein: Today is not a happy occasion. There's nobody who would be more committed to rooting out misconduct if it happened. Rosenstein talks about some misconduct being known when it occurred, meaning Comey.
Show this thread -
Rosenstein basically making argument that they have to protect the remaining things otherwise commit the same errors that Comey did. Claimed Trump was committed to transparency w/a straight face.

Rosenstein said universe of docs was 1.2 M, tho not all relevant. Notes DOJ started turning over docs before investigation complete. Describes response to hoaxes based on redaction.

Rosenstein: in my line of work we complete an investigation before we make allegations against anybody. We back our allegations w/sworn oath.

"Ignore the tyranny of the news cycle." Not the hugest Rosenstein fan but this statement nails it.

Wray: In just past week we've had 100 employees working day and night producing thousands of additional pages. [Taking them away from investigating public corruption and whatnot, of course]

Wray: There will be times we feel pressure not to follow our procedures but those are precisely the times it matters.

WOWOWOWOW. Goodlatte lets DeSantis have the first question. As I never cease to point out, DeSantis is the person MOST EASILY shown to have benefitted from RU tampering.
Show this thread -
The reason Goodlatte did that is bc reporters often run and file their stories. So Goodlatte is letting someone who has HUGE reason to bury RU investigation get the headlines beating up Rosenstein. Will reporters understand that when they get used by this?
Show this thread -
DeSantis just made sure Rosenstein wasn't able to answer the question he just asked.
Show this thread -
DeSantis: We talk about the Mueller investigation but it's really the Rosenstein investigation. It seems like you should be recused from this.
Show this thread -
Someone on the Dem side needs to make sure Rosenstein gets to answer the questions that DeSantis didn't let him answer, but on GOP time.

Lofgren notes that some of the witnesses could lose their lives if their identity becomes known. Now lets Rosenstein deny that he threatened HPSCI staff w/contempt.
Show this thread -
Rosenstein: If someone comes forward and swears under oath that I threatened them, I'm happy to hear it.

Goodlatte continues to let the FL GOPers who most directly benefitted from the hack and leak have the early press time. And thus far, reporters aren't noting that significance.

Gaetz: Are you aware of any payments made prior to July opening. Rosenstein: No, but I wasn't there. Gatez: Stone and Caputo? Rosenstein: I wasn't there. Conveyed all questions.

BREAKING: The Russian who Stone entertained dealing dirt with was working for Russia, not the FBI. There's your headline folks.

Rosenstein first became aware that Nelly Ohr working for Fusion in Fall 2017. Gaetz: We need a date when you learned wife of your deputy was working for someone trying to undermine "president" Trump.
Show this thread -
Gaetz follows DeSantis' precedent of refusing to let Rosenstein answer. Now also trying to make a scandal out of the fact that Rosenstein won't discuss FISA in public.
Show this thread -
.
@RepGoodlatte for the first time does his job by letting Rosenstein actually answer the question. Half an hour in.Show this thread -
Gaetz now trying to get additional time, "Are they investigating you." (He wants to say Rosenstein needs to recuse.)
