I think even if I'm right -- that Mueller inquiry is coming to a head, one way or another -- I think people are dramatically underestimating how unpleasant it will be for everyone, not just for Trump's buddies.

Russia cannot do too much directly to the US barring military attack. They’re not significant trade partners, we don’t depend on their oil, etc. But they can do a lot to the Trump-Kushner family kleptocracy.

The part she mentioned - messing up the global oil supply - is something they can do, even if we don’t buy much of their oil directly. That by itself is not going to be catastrophic to the US. But there are definitely other “asymmetric” things they can pull off.

Asymmetric is a pretty weird word for one nation-state to use against another.

Also, while both are indeed nation states - in reality, russia is a third world s*hole in every regard other than the nukes. So yes, for poot to have been able to screw w/ our democracy - that’s like taking out a hi-tech spy satellite w/ a fertilizer IED. So yeah, assymetry.

That logic is remarkable: The richest nation in the world doesn't lock its door and therefore a burglar coming in it is asymmetric and particularly evil, even if they do the same? Nope. I mean, I get that people like to say that. It's dumb tho.

Not sure what you’re talking about, honest. Where the “evil” part came from; was never mentioned or implied. I was talking strictly about the means and effeciencies. What they did in 2016 was crude, low-tech and cheap - but it achieved what nukes could not have. Hence IED analogy

$30 IED taking out a multi-million $ Abrams M1A is assymetrical warfare. 9-11 - low tech, low cost - but dealt a blow to the superpower. (one can argue that the current state of deep s*t we’re in is a long-term consequence of that attack)

Not really. And info ops are something else entirely. I get that you fetishize the word. Lots of people do. It leads to stupid thinking.

JC - I don’t “fetishize” the word; I will never use it again. All I meant was, yes, Ru has efficient ways to make our life difficult; that do not involve launching their nukes. I’m going to assume the a-word has some extra meaning in the nat. sec. universe. Will not use again.

Tons of people in NatSEc use it. I think used about nation-states it serves to suggest any adversarial approach to the US is somehow unfair. Used that way, it's another form of American exceptionalism, IMO.

TY. I’ve studied this stuff a long time and been a USG contractor, but never worked directly in that community. (Don’t marry a Soviet citizen if you want to work for OGA.) I didn’t think IR folks use it with a pejorative overtone.
