Paul Manafort is going to jail. He is going to die there.

Addressed a bit of this here: https://www.emptywheel.net/2018/06/12/revisiting-trumps-joint-defense-agreement/ …

This is a great piece, as usual, but I have to ask: you really don’t think the answer is as simple as Manafort thinking: “as soon as I flip my life, and perhaps the lives of those I love, is essentially forfeit?” You don’t think he’s more afraid of Russians than he is prison?

I think the scope of CA & NY state weight hanging over Manafort is considerable, but I am not sure whether Manafort believes that to be true. (and I could be wrong, but there seem to be a lot of crime-related real estate shenanigans in each state)
-
Manafort was wearing two ankle bracelets because Virginia has filed charges against him. Charges that could result in 23-30 yrs. Manafort is 69. Manafort isn’t merely an American political opponent. He’s wrought destruction worldwide. He deserves prison. Good riddance.

Until Trump’s own fate is confirmed, he is not going to pardon any crony. Worse than impeachment/indictment would be to have it happen while Manafort or Cohen or any of them are walking around free forever.

What about the theory he’s better off alive in jail rather dead due to the fear of retaliation from Putin?

If he hadn't decided to be Trump's campaign chair, would he ever have been charged with any of these crimes? And if not, why not?
-
Yes. The FBI was investigating him at least by 2014.https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/the-fbi-wiretap-on-paul-manafort-is-a-big-deal-heres-why/2017/09/19/e8c33b9a-9d74-11e7-9c8d-cf053ff30921_story.html?utm_term=.a2ca5b5d6b5f …

But didn't they decide to drop it? Or was that a different case...

I have to wonder how afraid he is of the Russians. He owes them money and people who turn on THEM end up poisoned, or shot.

My guess is that even if he did, and he had good enough information to be completely released, well... The oligarchs can make people disappear.

Suspect he’s more worried about polonium than Trump.

Not a lawyer here. I only have 2 cents, but the things Manafort has done have been 4 a very long time, long before Trump. Could be the pardon piece 4 sure but also, there’s no way he’s getting a free pass even 4 exposing Trump. Manafort has been a traitor 4 a very long time.

Maybe the deal they’re offering isn’t good enough for him.?????

Of course there is still the possibility that Hillary did not lose because of Russia.

Nope. If he had anything on Trump he'd have flipped already. By the way all the charges against him are related to his own bad business practices. Keep reaching kiddies.

Can’t the tax charges be brought up at a state level though?

This is probably right. But at the moment, Trump is sending all the opposite signals.
